The municipality of Ponce announced its tourism marketing campaign “Ponce is.”
The mayor, María “Mayita” Meléndez, said the campaign seeks to “generate interest of the attractions in Ponce, highlight the port, the Mercedita airport as an entry point to the city, and achieve the goal of positioning Ponce as one of the best tourist destinations in the Caribbean.”
The municipal investment for the campaign is $30,000 a year.
Abundant in historical and cultural treasures, Ponce — also known as the “Perla del Sur” — is one of the largest and most populous cities in Puerto Rico, second only to San Juan. Ponce, according to the last Census, has a population of approximately 150,000 people.
One of the square’s most outstanding structures is the “Parque de Bombas”, an old fire station which has been converted into a museum. Around the plaza you will also many charming coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques selling locally made products.
The Ponce Art Museum has also gained international recognition for its permanent collection of 4,500 pieces, consisting of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, ceramics, photographs, video and sound installations.
Outside of the city, soak up some sun on Puerto Rico’s beautiful southern beaches or take a boat ride to the enchanting Caja de Muertos island.
Ponce has a seaside boardwalk, named “La Guancha”, lined with restaurants and kiosks selling food, beer, cocktails and soft drinks. This place is a popular entertainment destination for locals and an ideal place to kick back after a day of strolling around the city.
In November, Ponce welcomed the Royal Caribbean cruise Serenade of the Seas, with 2,500 travelers which provided the city $154,000 in profits.
Many of the people who landed purchased tours to various destinations within the city such as the town center, Serrallés castle, Tibes Ceremonial Park, Hacienda Buena Vista, Hacienda La Mocha and the Ponce Museum of Art, to name a few.
“On Jan. 2, Royal Caribbean will return with another cruise. The Port of Ponce is one of the 19 projects under reconstruction in the city,” said the mayor.
The Mercedita airport is also being renovated. Several major improvements on the airstrip and the passenger terminal will make the airport more attractive to passengers.
